Is Yogurt safe for dogs?
Plain, unsweetened yogurt is safe in small amounts and a source of probiotics. Avoid flavoured or sweetened kinds — especially any with xylitol.
Plain, unsweetened yogurt is safe for most dogs in small amounts and can provide protein, calcium and gut-friendly probiotics. Choose natural yogurt with no added sugar, and critically no xylitol (birch sugar) — this sweetener appears in some low-fat and "diet" yogurts and is highly toxic to dogs. Avoid flavoured yogurts, which are high in sugar and may contain fruit like grapes that are dangerous. Bear in mind that yogurt still contains lactose, so dogs with dairy sensitivity may get diarrhoea or gas; start with a small spoonful. Greek yogurt is lower in lactose and often better tolerated. Offer it as an occasional treat, not a daily staple.
