Safety guide

Is Alcohol safe for dogs?

Toxic — emergency

Alcohol is acutely toxic to dogs and can be fatal even in small amounts.

Dogs process alcohol much less efficiently than humans. Even small amounts of beer, wine, spirits, or alcohol-containing foods can cause vomiting, disorientation, dangerous drops in blood sugar and body temperature, and in severe cases, respiratory failure.

Symptoms to watch for

  • Vomiting
  • Disorientation
  • Excessive urination
  • Seizures
  • Respiratory depression
