Meet the German Shepherd
Few breeds are as capable as the German Shepherd. Brave, loyal, and extraordinarily trainable, they serve in police, military, and service roles worldwide — and make devoted family guardians when given a job to do and proper socialisation.
Temperament & personality
German Shepherds are confident and steady with their family but naturally aloof with strangers, which makes early, thorough socialisation essential. They are intensely loyal and form a strong bond with their primary person.
Exercise & grooming
This is an athletic, working breed that needs vigorous daily exercise plus mental challenges — training, scent work, or a sport. Their double coat sheds heavily (they are nicknamed “German shedders”); brush several times a week.
Health to watch
Prone to hip and elbow dysplasia and, in some lines, degenerative myelopathy and bloat. Choose health-tested lines and learn the signs of bloat in deep-chested breeds.
Breed is a guide, not a guarantee — every dog is an individual. For anything specific to your dog, your vet is the best source.
