Meet the Australian Shepherd
Despite the name, the Australian Shepherd was developed in the American West as a ranch and herding dog. Strikingly marked and exceptionally smart, “Aussies” are athletic, devoted workers who thrive when they have a purpose.
Temperament & personality
Aussies are intelligent, eager, and deeply bonded to their people. Their herding drive means they like to stay busy and may try to herd children or pets. Under-exercised, they can become anxious or destructive.
Exercise & grooming
This breed needs vigorous daily exercise plus mental challenges — training, agility, or herding work. The medium double coat sheds and needs regular brushing. Best suited to active, engaged homes.
Health to watch
Generally healthy. Watch for hip dysplasia, certain eye conditions, and sensitivity to some medications (the MDR1 gene) — ask your vet about testing.
Breed is a guide, not a guarantee — every dog is an individual. For anything specific to your dog, your vet is the best source.
