Meet the Labrador Retriever

The Labrador Retriever is consistently one of the most popular dogs in the world, and for good reason: it pairs an easygoing, people-loving temperament with the brains and biddability that make it a star at everything from family life to assistance work. Labs thrive on company and activity.

Temperament & personality

Labs are sociable, gentle, and famously food-motivated, which makes training a joy. They get on well with children, strangers, and other animals. Bored or under-exercised, though, they can become mouthy and mischievous.

Exercise & grooming

Plan for at least an hour of exercise a day — Labs love to swim, fetch, and run. Their short double coat sheds year-round and heavily in season, so weekly (and seasonal daily) brushing helps. Watch their weight: Labs will eat almost anything.

Health to watch

Generally robust, but prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, obesity, and certain eye conditions. Buy from health-tested parents and keep them lean to protect their joints.
