Meet the Golden Retriever

Goldens are the quintessential family dog: patient with children, eager to please, and happiest when they are part of everything you do. Originally bred to retrieve game, they remain athletic, intelligent workers who excel in obedience, therapy, and assistance roles.

Temperament & personality

Affectionate and trusting almost to a fault, Golden Retrievers rarely meet a stranger. Their gentleness makes them wonderful with kids, but their love of company means they do not cope well with being left alone for long.

Exercise & grooming

They need substantial daily exercise and mental stimulation. The dense, water-repellent double coat sheds and needs brushing several times a week to prevent matting. Regular ear checks help, as their floppy ears can trap moisture.

Health to watch

Predisposed to hip and elbow dysplasia and to certain cancers as they age. Reputable breeders health-test, and keeping your Golden at a healthy weight supports joint and overall health.
