Meet the Beagle
Bred to hunt in packs, the Beagle is sociable, sturdy, and led by its nose. That famous sense of smell makes them wonderful, merry companions — and occasionally single-minded escape artists when an interesting scent appears.
Temperament & personality
Beagles are friendly and excellent with children and other dogs, thanks to their pack heritage. They can be stubborn and are easily distracted by smells, so patient, reward-based training is key. They are also vocal — expect baying.
Exercise & grooming
Give them daily exercise and a securely fenced area; a Beagle on a scent will wander. Their short coat is easy to care for with weekly brushing. Watch food intake — Beagles are notorious counter-surfers.
Health to watch
Generally healthy and long-lived. Keep an eye on weight, ears (they trap moisture), and some breed-linked conditions like epilepsy and hypothyroidism.
Breed is a guide, not a guarantee — every dog is an individual. For anything specific to your dog, your vet is the best source.
