Meet the Dachshund

Bred to hunt badgers, the Dachshund is brave, tenacious, and far bigger in attitude than in body. Available in two sizes and three coat types, they are devoted to their people and bring huge character to a small package.

Temperament & personality

Dachshunds are lively, clever, and often stubborn — they were bred to work independently. They bond closely with their family and can be wary of strangers. Early socialisation helps with their sometimes feisty streak.

Exercise & grooming

They enjoy walks and play but should avoid jumping and stairs to protect their long backs. Grooming depends on coat type. Keeping them lean is one of the most important things you can do for their spine.

Health to watch

Their long backs make them prone to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). Prevent jumping on and off furniture, keep them at a healthy weight, and see a vet promptly for any sign of back pain or weakness.
