Meet the Bernese Mountain Dog
The Bernese Mountain Dog is a striking tricolour giant from the Swiss Alps, bred to pull carts and watch over farms. Gentle, affectionate, and calm, the “Berner” is a devoted family dog with a famously sweet temperament.
Temperament & personality
Berners are good-natured, calm, and deeply attached to their families — wonderful with children and generally easygoing with other animals. They can be aloof with strangers and hate being left alone.
Exercise & grooming
Moderate daily exercise suits them, and they love cool weather. The thick double coat sheds heavily year-round and needs frequent brushing. They mature slowly and stay puppyish for a while.
Health to watch
Sadly prone to a short lifespan and higher cancer risk, plus hip and elbow dysplasia and bloat. Health-tested parents and attentive care matter for this big breed.
