Meet the Shiba Inu

The Shiba Inu is Japan’s most popular companion dog: an ancient spitz breed, compact and agile, with a dignified, almost cat-like air. Bold, alert, and fiercely independent, the Shiba is full of personality — and famously sure it knows best.

Temperament & personality

Shibas are confident, loyal, and aloof — devoted to their family but reserved with strangers and other dogs. They have a strong prey drive, a stubborn streak, and the dramatic “Shiba scream” when displeased. Early, consistent socialisation is essential.

Exercise & grooming

Give them daily exercise and a securely fenced yard — their prey drive and independence make reliable off-lead recall rare. The double coat “blows” heavily twice a year; otherwise Shibas are remarkably clean and almost odourless, grooming themselves like cats.

Health to watch

Generally healthy and long-lived. Watch for allergies and skin issues, luxating patella, hip dysplasia, and eye conditions such as glaucoma. Buy from health-tested lines.
