Meet the Great Dane
One of the tallest of all breeds, the Great Dane is a giant with a famously gentle disposition. Bred to hunt boar but now a calm companion, the Dane is affectionate, patient, and well suited to family life — provided it has the space.
Temperament & personality
Great Danes are friendly, dependable, and people-oriented — often convinced they’re lap dogs. They’re generally good with children and other animals when well socialised. Their sheer size makes early training essential.
Exercise & grooming
They need moderate daily exercise, with care not to over-exercise growing puppies. The short coat is easy to care for. Their size scales up every cost — food, beds, medication, and vet care.
Health to watch
Giant breeds are prone to bloat (a life-threatening emergency), heart conditions, and joint problems, and sadly have short lifespans. Learn the signs of bloat and feed thoughtfully.
Breed is a guide, not a guarantee — every dog is an individual. For anything specific to your dog, your vet is the best source.
