Is Xylitol safe for dogs?

Xylitol (artificial sweetener) causes rapid blood sugar crash and liver failure.

Xylitol is found in sugar-free gum, some peanut butters, candies, baked goods, and medications. Even a small amount triggers a rapid, severe drop in blood sugar and can cause liver failure. It is one of the most acutely toxic substances for dogs.

Symptoms to watch for

  • Vomiting
  • Weakness
  • Wobbling / loss of coordination
  • Seizures
  • Lethargy
  • Coma

What to do immediately
