Is Tomatoes safe for dogs?
Use with caution
Ripe red tomato flesh is fine in moderation, but green unripe tomatoes, stems and leaves are toxic and sauces are unsafe.
The ripe red flesh of a tomato is non-toxic and safe as an occasional treat in small amounts. The danger is in the green parts — unripe (green) tomatoes, along with the stems and leaves of the plant, contain solanine and tomatine, which are toxic to dogs. Also avoid tomato-based sauces, ketchup and tinned tomatoes, which typically contain onion, garlic, salt or sugar. Keep dogs away from tomato plants in the garden.
Symptoms to watch for
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Drooling
- Lethargy or weakness
- Loss of coordination
- Muscle tremors (in significant ingestions)
What to do immediately
- 1Remove any green tomato, stems or leaves from reach
- 2Note what and how much was eaten
- 3Offer fresh water
- 4Monitor closely for gastrointestinal or neurological signs
When to call your vet
Your dog ate green tomatoes or any part of the plant, or shows vomiting, diarrhoea, weakness, tremors or loss of coordination.
