Is Sausage safe for dogs?

Sausages are high in fat, salt and seasonings, often including toxic onion or garlic powder, and are best avoided.
Sausages are heavily processed and typically loaded with fat, salt and spices. Many contain onion or garlic powder, which are toxic to dogs and can damage red blood cells. The high fat content also raises the risk of pancreatitis, while the salt can contribute to salt overload, so sausage is best kept off the menu rather than offered as a treat.
Symptoms to watch for

- Diarrhoea
- Abdominal pain
- Excessive thirst or urination
- Lethargy or weakness
What to do immediately
- 1Prevent access to any remaining sausage
- 2Make fresh water freely available
- 3Note how much was eaten and whether it contained onion or garlic
- 4Monitor for vomiting, diarrhoea or signs of abdominal pain
When to call your vet
Contact your vet if a large amount was eaten, if it contained onion or garlic, or if your dog shows vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain or weakness.
