Safety guide

Is Potatoes safe for dogs?

Use with caution

Plain cooked potato is fine in moderation, but raw or green potatoes contain toxic solanine.

A small amount of plain, cooked potato is safe for most dogs. Raw potatoes and any green or sprouting potatoes are not — they contain solanine, which is toxic to dogs. Always cook potatoes fully and serve them plain, with no butter, salt, or fried preparations, and never feed chips or crisps. Dogs with diabetes should avoid potato because of its effect on blood sugar.

Symptoms to watch for

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Lethargy
  • Weakness
  • Loss of coordination
  • Slowed heart rate (with significant solanine ingestion)

What to do immediately

  1. 1Remove any raw or green potato from reach
  2. 2Note how much was eaten and when
  3. 3Offer fresh water
  4. 4Monitor for gastrointestinal or neurological signs
