Is Pomegranate safe for dogs?

Pomegranate is not toxic, but the seeds and tannins commonly upset a dog’s stomach.
Pomegranate is not poisonous to dogs, but the raw seeds (arils) and the tannins and antioxidants they contain frequently cause vomiting or diarrhoea, especially when eaten in quantity. The tough seeds can also be hard to digest and, in large amounts, may pose a mild obstruction risk. It is best avoided in any real quantity — a stray aril or two is unlikely to cause harm, but there is no need to offer it.

- Stomach upset
- Drooling
- Loss of appetite
What to do immediately
- 1Remove any remaining pomegranate
- 2Offer fresh water and monitor for vomiting or diarrhoea
- 3Withhold other treats while the stomach settles
When to call your vet
Vomiting or diarrhoea is severe, persists beyond 24 hours, or your dog becomes lethargic or stops drinking.
