Safety guide
Is Olives safe for dogs?
Yes — plain, pitted, unsalted olives are safe in small amounts. Avoid brined, stuffed or marinated ones.
Plain olives, with the stone removed and no added salt, are safe for dogs as an occasional treat in small amounts. The flesh isn't toxic. The problems are the extras: most shop olives are brined or marinated and very high in salt, and stuffed or seasoned varieties may contain garlic, onion or other flavourings that are harmful. The pit (stone) is also a choking and blockage hazard and can crack teeth. Stick to a plain, pitted olive now and then, and skip anything tinned in brine or dressed up.
