Is Milk safe for dogs?
A few laps won't poison your dog, but most adult dogs are lactose intolerant, so milk commonly causes diarrhoea, gas and upset.
Milk is not toxic, but it is not a good idea for most dogs. After weaning, dogs produce less of the enzyme (lactase) needed to digest the lactose in milk, so many adults are effectively lactose intolerant. Cow's and goat's milk can therefore cause diarrhoea, gas, bloating and stomach upset, sometimes hours after drinking it. Milk is also high in fat and sugar, adding unnecessary calories. A small lap or two is unlikely to cause harm, but it is best avoided as a regular offering — provide fresh water instead. If your dog tolerates dairy, a spoonful of plain unsweetened yogurt is generally gentler than milk.

- Vomiting
- Restlessness or gurgling stomach
What to do immediately
- 1Stop offering milk and other dairy
- 2Provide fresh water to prevent dehydration if there is diarrhoea
- 3Feed a plain, bland diet and monitor stools for the next day
When to call your vet
Diarrhoea or vomiting is severe, bloody or lasts more than 24–48 hours, or your dog seems lethargic or dehydrated.
