Safety guide
Is Coconut safe for dogs?
Safe for dogs
Yes — coconut flesh and oil are safe for dogs in small amounts.
Plain coconut flesh and coconut oil are non-toxic and can be offered in small quantities. They are high in fat, though, so too much may cause an upset stomach, loose stools or, over time, contribute to weight gain and pancreatitis risk. Never let a dog chew on the hard shell, which is a choking and obstruction hazard, and avoid sweetened or flavoured coconut products.
Symptoms to watch for
- Loose stools
- Diarrhoea
- Bloating or gas
