Safety guide

Is Broccoli safe for dogs?

Use with caution

Broccoli is safe only in very small amounts — larger servings irritate the gut and the stalks can choke or obstruct small dogs.

Plain broccoli florets are non-toxic and can be given as an occasional treat in small quantities. However, broccoli contains isothiocyanates, which can irritate a dog's stomach and cause gas or upset when eaten in quantity — as a rule florets should make up no more than about 10% of the daily food. The tough stalks are also a choking and intestinal-obstruction hazard, especially in small dogs, so chop finely and serve plain (no oil, salt, onion or garlic).

Symptoms to watch for

  • Gas and bloating
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Retching or gagging (choking on stalk)
  • Abdominal discomfort

What to do immediately

  1. 1Stop feeding broccoli immediately
  2. 2Offer fresh water
  3. 3Watch for choking or signs of obstruction (repeated vomiting, straining, lethargy)
  4. 4Withhold further treats and monitor for 12–24 hours

When to call your vet

Your dog is choking, gagging repeatedly, vomiting persistently, straining or unable to pass stool, or shows lethargy or a bloated painful belly.
