Safety guide

Is Avocado safe for dogs?

Use with caution

The flesh in small amounts is low risk — the pit, skin, and leaves are dangerous.

Avocado contains persin, which is toxic to many animals. In dogs, the flesh in small quantities is generally considered low toxicity. The pit is a choking hazard and can cause intestinal blockage. Guacamole typically contains onion and garlic.

Symptoms to watch for

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Difficulty breathing (if pit ingested)
  • Lethargy

What to do immediately

  1. 1If your dog ate only a small piece of flesh: monitor for 24 hours
  2. 2If your dog swallowed the pit: call your vet immediately
  3. 3If your dog ate guacamole: call your vet — onion and garlic content

When to call your vet

Your dog swallowed the pit, ate the skin or leaves, or ate guacamole.
