Meet the Shih Tzu
The Shih Tzu was bred as a palace companion in ancient China, and companionship is still its whole purpose. Affectionate, outgoing, and happy in apartments, it’s a sturdy little dog with a flowing coat and a sunny outlook.
Temperament & personality
Shih Tzus are loving, sociable, and good-natured — happy to greet everyone and excellent with children and other pets. They are companion dogs through and through and want to be with you.
Exercise & grooming
A short daily walk and play are enough. The long double coat needs daily brushing (many owners keep it trimmed short). Their flat faces mean they can struggle in heat, and their eyes need gentle care.
Health to watch
A brachycephalic breed prone to breathing and eye issues, dental disease, and overheating. Keep them cool, manage the coat and eyes, and keep their teeth clean.
Breed is a guide, not a guarantee — every dog is an individual. For anything specific to your dog, your vet is the best source.
